China's 40,000+ pet stores are still facing significant challenges. A 2020 survey by the China International Pet Show (CIPS) found that 45.5% of pet stores had closed, 31.8% had shortened business hours, and 20.5% had shifted to online sales. However, there have been some signs of recovery in 2021. According to petdata.cn, pet owners have been placing more service orders with pet stores. Grooming and skin care services have seen a 31.7% increase from 2020, while the demand for photography services, amusement centers, and training has increased by 96.6%, 25.5%, and 116.7%, respectively, compared to the previous year.
The survival and success of pet stores is crucial for post-epidemic recovery in China. In April, CIPS launched the "Empowering 10,000 China Pet Retailers" campaign, which includes training seminars in six cities and plans to hold 200 seminars and events by the end of the year. The campaign is also a strategic move by CIPS to enhance its domestic buyers' network in China.
